2021 Expansion Draft Mock Draft 1.0

  • By Andrew Taylor, Day 135, 2020

Welcome to the expansion mock draft. Each update of this document will tie to the corresponding version of the 2021 mock draft article as selections here will likely be impacted by the expansion team's selections in the 1st round of the rookie draft. Changes will only be made to this document when trades or significant ranking reviews materially change the likely decision-making process of expansion teams. Finally at this stage the mock draft will only cover the first 2 rounds (up to pick 20) as it is anticipated that the final round will include incoming rookies from the late 1st round who may not be protected. The final version of this mock draft, after the conclusion of the rookie draft and the locking of protections will include these players.

1. Louisville Colonels

Having taken PG Evan Coleman with the 22nd selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Colonels will use the 1st pick in the expansion draft to select SF Shandon James of the Austin Rockets. James, the 2013 rookie of the year, is the most established player available and will provide the Colonels will a dominant scorer on the wing.
SELECTION - Shandon James (SF)

2. Dallas Predators

Having taken PG Zach Lynch with the 20th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Predators will use the 2nd pick in the expansion draft to select SF Derrick Griffin of the Houston Lightning. Derrick Griffin, one of the best young defenders in the league, will provide the Predators with a strong defensive identify on the wing, but should probably be paired with a strong offensive player at SG to offset his struggles at that end of the court.
SELECTION - Derrick Griffin (SF)

3. Baltimore Bullets

Having taken SF Javion Edwards with the 18th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Bullets will use the 3rd pick in the expansion draft to select PG Ashley Winters of the Mexico City Jaguars. Winters, who had a career best season in 2020 will provide the Bullets with a talented distributor to bring together their incoming talent.
SELECTION - Ashley Winters (PG)

4. Pittsburgh Vipers

Having taken PG/SG Kendrick Hill with the 16th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Vipers will use the 4th pick in the expansion draft to select SG Kierall Richardson of the Cincinnati Kings. Richardson showed flashes of his talent in his rookie year but was too often lost in the rotation behind LaGarde and Turner. He'll have far more opportunity at the Vipers.
SELECTION - Kierall Richardson (SG)

5. Charlotte Drones

Having taken PG/SG DeAndre Morgan with the 14th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Drones will use the 5th pick in the expansion draft to select C Omar Croyle of the Philadelphia Warriors. Croyle, one of the best defensive big men in the league, will immediately provide the team with a strong defensive foundation to build upon.
SELECTION - Omar Croyle (C)

6. Minneapolis Blizzards

Having taken C/PF Donovan Galloway with the 12th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Blizzards will use the 6th pick in the expansion draft to select PG Curtis Price of the Kansas City Knights. Price will provide veteran leadership and a strong offensive counterpoint to the more defensively orientated Galloway
SELECTION - Curtis Price (PG)

7. Oklahoma City Barons

Having taken C Khalen Anthony with the 10th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Barons will use the 7th pick in the expansion draft to select PF Wesley Sherman of the Detroit Mustangs. Anthony is a more offensively minded center and the defensive prowess of Sherman will give the Barons a well balanced front court heading into their first season.
SELECTION - Wesley Sherman (PF)

8. Portland Lumberjacks

Having taken SF Uman Akele with the 8th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Lumberjacks will use the 8th pick in the expansion draft to select C Ivan Obradovic of the Chicago Jailbirds. With the versatile Akele on the wing Obradovic will provide the team with a strong defensive presence in the post.
SELECTION - Ivan Obradovic (C)

9. Denver Dragons

Having taken SG Deron Bentley with the 6th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Dragons will use the 9th pick in the expansion draft to select PF Nwosu Odiambo of the Cincinnati Kings. With Bentley's offensive firepower on the wing Odiambo will provide defence and rebounding at the 4 with the energy and endurance to play the up tempo style that Denver may adopt to take advantage of its unique home court advantage.
SELECTION - Nwosu Odiambo (PF)

10. Boston Crusaders

Having taken PG Josh Gamble with the 4th selection in the rookie draft we anticipate that the Crusaders will use the 10th pick in the expansion draft to select C Alonzo Traylor of the Miami Cyclones. With Gamble leading the team offensively Traylor will provide the team with a defensive centrepiece in the post.
SELECTION - Alonzo Traylor (C)

11. Boston Crusaders

Having secured a PG in the rookie draft and a C with their first expansion selection we anticipate that the Crusaders will use the 11th pick in the expansion draft to select PF Ryan Collinson of the Houston Lightning. With a strong draft pedigree the talented Collinson was stifled for opportunity behind Clarkson and Spencer but will pair with Traylor to create a strong defensive front court.
SELECTION - Ryan Collinson (PF)

12. Denver Dragons

Having secured a SG in the rookie draft and a PF with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Dragons will use the 12th pick in the expansion draft to select PG Jared Monroe of the Los Angeles Fireballs. Tall for a PG, Monroe has shown flashes at the Fireballs but has often been pushed down the depth chart by late season trades.
SELECTION - Jared Monroe (PG)

13. Portland Lumberjacks

Having secured a SF in the rookie draft and a C with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Lumberjacks will use the 13th pick in the expansion draft to select SG Akua Frazier of the Philadelphia Warriors. Frazier's shot is inconsistent but when it's dropping he's a solid starting shooting guard, and at 25 he still hasn't hit his peak.
SELECTION - Akua Frazier (SG)

14. Oklahoma City Barons

Having secured a C in the rookie draft and a PF with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Barons will use the 14th pick in the expansion draft to select SF Sidney Cavenell of the Mexico City Jaguars. Cavenell is an experienced and versatile SF who struggled early in the season and was subsequently buried behind the Jag's young talent.
SELECTION - Sidney Cavenell (SF)

15. Minneapolis Blizzards

Having secured a C/PF in the rookie draft and a PG with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Blizzards will use the 15th pick in the expansion draft to select C Marcus Enright of the Atlanta Devils. Enright is an experienced veteran capable who'll give you close to a double double each night but was buried in Atlanta behind Slattery and Spencer.
SELECTION - Marcus Enright (C)

16. Charlotte Drones

Having secured a PG in the rookie draft and a C with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Drones will use the 16th pick in the expansion draft to select SG/SF Lorenzo Charles of the Miami Cyclones. Charles's well-rounded game was vital in the Scorpions run to the championship in 2019 but he couldn't replicate that form at the Cyclones in 2020.
SELECTION - Lorenzo Charles (SG)

17. Pittsburgh Vipers

Having secured a PG in the rookie draft and a SF with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Vipers will use the 17th selection in the expansion draft to select C Tahric Kimbrough of the Phoenix Vultures. Kimbrough is an experienced veteran who didn't have much of an opportunity at the Fireballs before his trade to the Vultures. He finished the season in good touch and will be happy to join an expansion team for a bigger opportunity.
SELECTION - Tahric Kimbrough (C)

18. Baltimore Bullets

Having secured a SF in the rookie draft and a PG with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Bullets will use the 18th selection in the expansion draft to select C Isaiah Foreman of the Detroit Mustangs. Foreman didn't play much in his rookie year but showed promising flashes. He'll have the opportunity to show much more at the Bullets.
SELECTION - Isaiah Foreman (C)

19. Dallas Predators

Having secured a PG in the rookie draft and a SF with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Predators will use the 19th selection in the expansion draft to select PF/C Jon Agau of the Seattle Thunder. Agau is young and raw but had excellent production, especially defensively, on a stacked Thunder team. He'll have far more opportunity at the Predators.
SELECTION - Jon Agau (PF/C)

20. Louisville Colonels

Having secured a PG in the rookie draft and a SF with their first expansion selection we anticipate the Colonels will use the 20th selection in the expansion draft to select SG/SF Luke Williams of the Phoenix Vultures. Williams is an experienced veteran, an excellent rebounder for a wing, but is no longer part of the Vultures future.
SELECTION - Luke Williams (SG/SF)
