2021 Mock Draft 1.0

  • By Andrew Taylor, Day 129, 2020

Welcome to the 2021 mock draft. The first volume will utilize end of season rankings as the lottery has not yet been conducted. Minor updates (V1.1 for example) will be made to take into account trades that may impact the ownership of picks, or the needs of organizations. Major updates (V2.0 for example) will be made after the lottery has been conducted and when the scouting services revise their rankings. For the expansion teams we will utilize a 'best available player' methodology in the absence of any other pertinent information.

1. Toronto Huskies (15-41)

SELECTION - QUAVIUS WILLIAMSON (PF/C)

This will be the Huskies fourth Top 5 pick in the last three drafts. With recent high picks utilized on PG, SG and SF the team will likely be looking to add to its big man rotation in this draft. Whilst the team could utilize the pick to take a center closer in age to the rest of their young core than the established Bryant King we anticipate that the team will ultimately draft a PF. The team has no true PF on its roster and with Syracuse's Quavius Williamson available this seems the perfect time to address this shortcoming.

2. Miami Cyclones (16-40)

SELECTION - DETREZ OWENS (SF/SG)

The Miami Cyclones entered the 2020 season with playoff aspirations but when the team opened the season poorly GM Laser responded quickly and embraced a rebuilding strategy. This pick is the first of seven 1st round picks the team owns over the next three drafts. The team's biggest position of need is at center however taking Sprinkle would be a little bit of a reach. Instead we anticipate that the team will take the best wing available to complement Curry and Jinghau. Given the team's focus on the 3pt shot we believe that the team will ultimately select UCLA's Detrez Owens who averaged .400% from range on 9.8 attempts per game.

3. Mexico City Jaguars (18-38)

SELECTION - JARVIS McSWINE (PF/SF)
The Mexico City Jaguars are still finalizing their expansion protections, so this pick may change hands prior to the draft. But for the purposes of this mock we will assume the team utilizes their own pick. Due to a wealth of high draft picks over the past few years the team now has a developing young talent at each position, particularly at PG where the team has both Winters and Adams. The team could use more depth at SF behind Vega and another big man to play behind Martin and Hooker as their backup center Mirko Blazevic will likely be lost to free agency. Conveniently there is player who could meet both these needs in Ohio State's Jarvis McSwine.

4. Boston Crusaders (EXP)

SELECTION - JOSH GAMBLE (PG)
The Boston Crusaders will select first amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best available player. As such we believe that the team will stop the draft slide of the scouting services' consensus number #1, Longhorn Josh Gamble.

5. Cincinnati Kings (18-38)

SELECTION - DEVON HARRELL (PG)

The stronger than anticipated rookie year of Richmond Benson (Aka Bensanity) has resulted in an expansion protection issue for the Cincinnati Kings. Currently we anticipate that they will not protect Kierall Richardson but the team could embrace a full rebuild and leave one of their senior players such as Jamar Strickland unprotected. Regardless, we anticipate that the team will utilize their pick on a PG as the team is unlikely to resign FA Kenyon Hammick leaving the team without a backup PG, whilst the team already has Turner and Lagarde in place on the wing. Given that Strickland is a more offensively minded PG we believe the team will focus on contrasting skill sets and select the more defensively minded Jayhawk Devon Harrell.

6. Denver Dragons (EXP)

SELECTION - DERON BENTLEY (SG)
The Denver Dragons will select second amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. Given the home court advantage that fast paced teams can foster in the Mile High City we believe that the team will select Alabama SG Deron Bentley, 1st in per 36 scoring in the CJBL this year.

7. Philadelphia Warriors (18-38)

SELECTION - JAMAYA SPRINKLE (C)

With the Philadelphia Warriors unlikely to protect veteran center Omar Croyle and vertically challenged rookie Isaac Foster better suited to the PF position we believe the Warriors will utilize their selection on the best available center. Whilst the team also has a need at the SG position it will be hard for the team to look past Wildcat Jamaya Sprinkle.

8. Portland Lumberjacks (EXP)

SELECTION - UMAN AKELE (SF)

The Portland Lumberjacks will select third amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe the team will select the versatile North Carolina State SF Uman Akele.

9. Detroit Mustangs (22-34)

SELECTION - IDRIS BERKLEY (SF/SG)

The Detroit Mustangs enter the draft with a clear goal, find a player to partner with Demetric Vaughn on the wing. Doing so would slide Bundu back to his natural home at PF and allow Douglas to adopt a 6th man role behind Vickery and Vaughn at PG and SG. As such we anticipate that the team will select North Carolina swingman Idris Berkley.

10. Oklahoma City Barons (EXP)

SELECTION - KHALEN ANTHONY (C)

The OKC Barons will select fourth amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe the team will select USC center Khalen Anthony.

11. Phoenix Vultures (23-33)

SELECTION - ODELL BRACEY (SG)

With the retirement of JBL legend Ben Winder and the likely loss of all-star Johan Arden in free agency the Vultures have holes at SG and C. With project Dimitri Ilic already on the roster at center we anticipate the team will attempt to fill the very large Ben Winder sized hole at SG by drafting UCLA SG Odell Bracey.

12. Minneapolis Blizzards (EXP)

SELECTION - DONOVAN GALLOWAY (C/PF)

The Minneapolis Blizzards will select fifth amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe that the team will select Georgia Tech big man Donovan Galloway.

13. Kansas City Knights (24-32)

SELECTION - JAMARCUS THYBULLE (PF/SF)

The Kansas City Knights don't currently have a quality PF, opting to fill the spot with Tarvis playing out of position and Jamarcus Norwood. However, if the team does not protect veteran PG Curtis Price ahead of the expansion draft they could have a far more pressing need at the PG position. However, assuming that Price is retained we anticipate that the Knights will address its PF weakness with the selection of versatile North Carolina PF JaMarcus Thybulle.

14. Charlotte Drones (EXP)

SELECTION - DeAndre Morgan (PG/SG)

The Charlotte Drones will select 6th amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe that the team will select North Carolina combo guard DeAndre Morgan.

15. Houston Lightning (25-31)

SELECTION - RAHMOND THOMPSON (C/PF)

The Houston Lightning enter the offseason looking to address the depth at the PF and PG positions ahead of anticipated losses in the expansion draft. The team also faces the potential loss of starting center Rashaan Hayes in free agency. As a result, we anticipate that the team will attempt to address its front court needs with the selection of West Virginia center Rahmond Thompson.

16. Pittsburgh Vipers (EXP)

SELECTION - KENDRICK HILL (PG/SG)

The Pittsburgh Vipers will select 7th amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe that the team will select Marquette combo guard Kendrick Hill.

17. Atlanta Devils (26-30)

SELECTION - GARRETT CUE (SF)

The Atlanta Devils enter the offseason with a strong big man rotation but with holes on the wing, especially if they are unable to resign FA Lucas Rush. As such we believe that the team will address this weakness with the selection of Memphis SF Garrett Cue.

18. Baltimore Bullets (EXP)

SELECTION - JAVION EDWARDS (SF/SG)

The Baltimore Bullets will select 8th amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe the team will target Georgetown swingman Javion Edwards.

19. New Orleans Hurricanes (29-27)

SELECTION - JACKSON MEYERS (SG)

The New Orleans Hurricanes had the best season in their history last year but fell short of the playoffs due to a substandard wing rotation that they will be aiming to address this offseason. As such we anticipate the team will aim for the best available wing player available, Illinois SG Jackson Meyers.

20. Dallas Predators (EXP)

SELECTION - ZACH LYNCH (PG)

The Dallas Predators will select 9th amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe the team will select Syracuse PG Zach Lynch.

21. Cincinnati Kings (Via New York Renegades, 32-24)

SELECTION - RANDALL DOZIER (PF/SF)

With their first pick in the draft the Cincinnati Kings addressed their need at PG. With their second pick in the first round, conveyed from the NY Renegades, the Kings will be looking to address their other need, PF. For this reason we anticipate that the team will select Providence PF Randall Dozier.

22. Louisville Colonels (EXP)

SELECTION - EVAN COLEMAN (PG)

The Louisville Colonels will select last amongst the expansion teams and we anticipate that they will select the best player available. As such we believe the team will select Louisville Cardinals star PG Evan Coleman in a move sure to excite the local fans.

23. St. Louis Skyhawks (32-24)

SELECTION - JALAN HOWARD (SF/SG)

The St. Louis enter the draft facing the possibility of losing SF Kellen Chambers in free agency and having lost their ability to play 3 big men with the retirement of Brian Oliver. As such we anticipate that the team will address it's wing depth with the selection of Michigan State swingman Jalan Howard.

24. Austin Rockets (33-23)

SELECTION - JADANTE HICKS (SG)
With the Austin Rockets rumoured to be leaving SF Shandon James unprotected in the upcoming expansion draft the team will be looking to address its wing depth alongside Reggie Goodwin and sophomore SF Emmanuel Mejia. As such we anticipate the team will select Kentucky SG JaDante Hicks.

25. Los Angeles Fireballs (34-22)

SELECTION - CODY MULLER (C/PF)

The Los Angeles Fireballs are loaded on the wings and with Colin Stafford getting up there in years the team will likely look for additional depth at PF or C. As such we anticipate that the team will take Sienna C Cody Muller.

26. Nashville Stars (37-19)

SELECTION - DORIAN MCCLEARY (SG)

The Nashville Stars will be looking to add wing talent behind starters Craig and Peeler. SG will likely take priority with Peeler entering free agency and Draper already in place as Craig's backup. As such we anticipate that the team will select Virginia SG Dorian McCleary.

27. Seattle Thunder (Via Oakland Tritons, 38-18)

SELECTION - JACK DONLON (PG)

The Seattle Thunder will likely use their first 1st round selection, conveyed from the Tritons, to select a backup PG given the strong possibility that Devante Parker will be lost to free agency. As such we anticipate that the team will select Mississipi State PG Jack Donlon.

28. Oakland Tritons (Via Las Vegas Scorpions, 39-17)

SELECTION - DAQUAN WHITE (SF)

The Oakland Tritons will use their pick, conveyed from the Scorpions, to address either their PG or SF situations. With the retirement of team icon Austin Williams and the free agency of Keith Humphries the team is light at PG. However, it does have a backup in place in Chris Giles. At SF Reggie Fortier is a free agent and it is possible that the team will not be able to resign both Humphries and Fortier to rich deals. If this scenario occurs we see the team choosing to retain Humphries. As such we anticipate that the team will use this selection to cover themselves at SF with the selection of CJBL leading scorer SF DaQuan White.

29. Seattle Thunder (40-16)

SELECTION - MITCHELL VAN BREE (SF)

Having addressed their pg depth with their first selection we anticipate the Seattle Thunder using their second pick to bolster their wing depth with Raymac and Carroll both entering free agency. As such we anticipate that the team will select Arizona SF Mitchell van Bree.

30. Chicago Jailbirds (41-15)

SELECTION - HEATH BRUTON (SG)

With the final selection in the first round the Chicago Jailbirds will likely pursue wing depth behind Cheaney and Carter in an attempt to reduce their workload next year. As such we anticipate that the team will select Illinois SG Heath Bruton.
