Portland Trades Out of Draft
- By Tim Wallis, Day 1, 2023
PORTLAND - A last minute deal during today's JBL Rookie Draft saw the Lumberjacks send their pick (19th) to Baltimore in exchange for the Bullets pick in 2024.
"We went into the draft with a very short list of players that we thought could make a difference for us in 2023," explained Lumberjacks GM Tim Wallis in the team's post-draft press conference. "It was always a possibility that we'd end up in a position where we felt like we weren't getting what we needed out of the pick and we were confident that we'd have options if it played out that way."
Pick 19 came to Portland as part of the deadline trade with the Jaguars which saw the Jacks' own pick (which ended up #14), Cedric Freeman and Shaun Burrell exchanged for Reggie Burke, Corey Anderton, Lorenzo Charles and the 1st round picks of the Jaguars (#19) and Cyclones (#20). Charles and #20 were recently packaged along with 2nd year center Derrick Aririguzoh and undrafted wing J.P. Marquardt for the Hurricanes 2024 1st and the Fireballs 2025 1st.
Essentially, the Lumberjacks last three trades have amounted to:
Out - Aririguzoh, Marquardt, Freeman, #14
In - Burke, 'Canes 24 1st, Bullets 24 1st, FBs 25 1st
"We feel like what we've put together here over the last two years is a great supporting cast that just needs a superstar," continued Wallis. "With these last few trades, we've put ourselves in a position to be a player in free agency while also restocking our selection of future draft picks."
