Los Angeles Sends HP to New Orleans for Vitas, Kidd 2024 1st Round

  • By Jron Magcale, Day 121, 2022

LOS ANGELES - Days after blockbuster trades were made, Los Angeles surprised everybody when GM Jron went on and confirmed that they have shipped veteran wing Hilton Phillips to the New Orleans Hornets for recently traded stretch forward and former Fireball Stoyanov Vitas, troubled PG Sebastian Kidd and a 2024 1st Round pick from New Orleans Hurricanes. The move was unconventional seeing that the Fireballs are riding on a 5-game winning streak going into the All-Star break.

Hilton Phillips was recently signed this offseason for $20M/2 years and the team was looking to contend this season but injuries held him back and wasn't able to show his 100% but when healthy he has showed his versatility in the wing averaging 16.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.9 spg and 0.7 bpg while shooting 51% from the field (42% 3FG), HP can play efficiently the PG, SG and SF position and known to be a solid perimeter defender because of his length. He will immediately contribute to the new look Hurricanes team that feature young wings that will be taken under HP's tutelage. Deron Bentley and Jalan Howard will benefit long term learning from one of the best versatile wing in the league.

For Los Angeles, Vitas will provide the necessary depth that they needed at the frontcourt and Kidd will for sure push Cassius Tyson and TJ Holloway for minutes. The future 1st rounder (2024 1st Round Pick) will be a move to get assets for the future. There will be a gaping hole now at the SG position and in which will be a toss up on whether Garrett Cue or Cassius Tyson will fill but both aren't natural SGs which will be interesting to see.

"HP has always been a consumate professional and we have talked to him an hour before the trade was even finalized and thanked him for his service with Los Angeles organization. It was a hard decision and I told myself I'm going to stay put this trade deadline but the deal was too good to pass up, will help both teams for sure. We wish HP all the best in New Orleans and with the talent the Hurricanes has, I'm sure HP will be in good company." GM Jron said confirming the trade.

This will Vitas 2nd tour with the Los Angeles franchise and will be an interesting situation how the now crowded PG position will be addressed and what they will do with the hole at the SG position.
