LA Confidential: Griffin Named to his 1st All-Star Appearance

  • By Jron Magcale, Day 120, 2026

LOS ANGELES - The Fireballs was ecstatic when they received the news that their defensive ace wing Derrick Griffin has been voted as an All-Star reserve in the West. The 29-year old defensive specialist has seen his offense improved this season thanks to the Fireballs run & gun system that helps him fit into the scheme more significantly being the 2nd option scorer behind 7x All-Star Chris LaCruz. Griffin has been averaging 18.6 ppg (his career-high) shooting 43% FG, 39% 3FG, 73% FT while also notching 7.5 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.05 spg and 2.07 bpg in 57 games on 36.8 mpg. He is no stranger to fast-paced teams as he played with the Scorpions during their fast-pace era but was barely a 3rd option in the stacked high octane Scorpions team. This season he is having a big year being a key piece on the Pacific Division-leading Fireballs. He is 3 3FG short to match his career-high total of 3FG as he is now at 130 while his previous record is at 133. He has been an excellent spot up shooter for the Fireballs as he knocks down 337 points from that play type while also being an asset in transition scoring 215 points on 225 transition plays. He is benefiting from LaCruz drawing defenders resulting for him getting good spot up looks. This season also features him more on Iso plays as of press time he have tied his total from last season of 101 points (on 107 Iso plays) and we are just approaching the break (He has 101 points on 116 Iso plays). Which meand the team is trusting him to operate on his own even with LaCruz on the lineup.

Right now Griffin is one of the front runners for Defensive Player of the Year having averaging 2.05 spg and 2.07 bpg being the only player this season to acccomplish such feat so far. His activity on shutting down the opposing star on the wings has been a valuable asset for the Fireballs. He has 3.7 DWS this season which is 2nd in the league behind Blizzards Donovan Galloway. His 106.7 DRtg (Team DRtg is 108.6) is impressive to say the least and has been pulling the team's Drtg average to elite level (2nd in the JBL in Drtg). His addition with the Fireballs has really a big blessing which currently turning the tide from all-offensive team to a well-balanced underrated defending team. "I am honored and I have worked my ass off every season to be the best version of me that I can be. I credit my teammates and coaches for trusting me to do my thing here in LA. Chris (LaCruz) will really push you to be great and will make you look good offensively. I am excited to play in my 1st All-Star game and I feel like a child all excited!" Griffin said about his selection for the All-Star game in MXC.
