Lumberjacks Draft Report - Part 1
- By Tim Wallis, Day 1, 2021
Pick 8 - Jarvis “Porky” McSwine (Ohio State)
A 6-8 combo forward that averaged 19.1 points, 7.6 rebounds 3.2 assists and 2.9 blocks, McSwine led the Buckeyes to the Elite 8 with a consistent tournament averaging over 22 points and 10 boards. While not projected to be a primary scorer in the pros, “Porky” is a ferocious rebounder and tenacious defender that should quickly endear himself to Portland.
Pick 23 - Derrick “Guzo” Aririguzoh (Cincinnati)
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, “Guzo” may have gone higher had he declared as a freshman. Asked to take more shots as a sophomore, his field goal percentage dropped from 54% to 43% and his stock suffered as a result. Averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.6 blocks, the 6-10 center will rarely be asked to shoot but has the potential to become an excellent defender and rebounder at the pro level.
Pick 33 - Jax “Mascot” LaRose (Wake Forest)
The City of Roses adopted this 6-2 point guard the moment his improbably apt name was read out early in the second round. Averaging 10.2 points and 6.8 assists for the Demon Deacons, LaRose hit on 42% of his three point attempts over his college career and does an excellent job of finding his teammates in clutch situations, with 14 assists in 31 clutch minutes as Wake Forest went +42.
Pick 38 - Austin “AB” Bryant (Mississippi Valley State)
The 6-10 Bryant put up good numbers (19.2ppg 5.6rpg 2.6bpg) against weaker opposition in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, but matched those with 19 points 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in the first round loss to St John’s. Unlike the previous picks, Bryant is a scorer first but he’s also capable at the other end and should see plenty of court time as a rookie.
