2025 Free Agency Review - Part 2 2022 Draft Options
- By Kris Burley, Day 1, 2025
In order to benchmark the 2022 Draft, I calculated the average for those players that have played 3 seasons which was $2,197,963 per Win Share
Antoine Willis - Chicago Jailbirds
2024 Salary - $2,500,000
Win Shares - 8.3
$ per WS - $400,000
WS Salary - $18,243,093
Variance - $15,743,093
The pick of the bunch, Willis had a fantastic 3rd year in 2024, significantly improving his offensive game. His FG% has dramatically improved and has decent passing ability. Could he develop in to an Obra like player sans the 3? Willis had both the highest ORTG and lowest DRTG of all starters on his team. A steal at the #19 pick.
Brandon Kelly - Balitmore Bullets
2024 Salary - $2,800,000
Win Shares - 7
$ per WS - $301,205
WS Salary - $15,385,741
Variance - $12,585,741
Kelly had a relatively stagnant year from a development perspective, however was a great contributor to the Bullets. He is quite similar to #2 Poke as a tall defensively minded player. Kelly is a year younger than Poke so it will be interesting to see if he achieves the 4th year leap.
Deon Slay – Baltimore Bullets
2024 Salary - $2,800,000
Win Shares - 6.9
$ per WS - $507,246
WS Salary - $15,165,945
Variance - $11,665,945
The 2024 most improved player. Not much more to add on Slay. The tallest? PG in the league had a breakout season and significantly improved on the offensive end.
The other top favourable $pWS var to actual salary were:
Rashaad Haslem Renegades $10,965,945
Deandre Stackhouse Predators $9,827,371
Victor Olojakpoke Kings $9,666,963
Mehdy Brown Scorpions $9,067,982
Connor Maitland Devils $8,231,445
Malik Phillips - St Louis Skyhawks
2024 Salary - $2,900,000
Win Shares - 0.3
$ per WS - $9,666,667
WS Salary - $659,389
Variance - ($2,240,611)
Turnovers. Something happened to Phillips in 2024. I'm not sure what. Here's his turnovers over the first 3 years.
One of JBL's greatest mysteries.
Brandon Weir - Stars:
2024 Salary - $3,300,000
Win Shares - 0.5
$ per WS - $ $6,600,000
WS Salary - $1,098,982
Variance - ($2,201,019)
Weir clearly isn't happy at the Stars, and the Stars should be happy with Weir. He is the 3rd worst shooter in the league with players > 60 games. Weir thinks he's an range shooter (56% from long/3) and he clearly isn't. His usage is very high for a player with 'Poor overall offensive awareness'. In fact for players with over 18% usage he has the 2nd lowest ORTG in the league (only Buie is worse).
Although he wasn't actually drafted, Georgi Okeke signed a $4m for 4 years with the Crusaders after the draft, his $pWS was $1.3m. Weirdly split his time 60/40 between SF and C this season. With no scouted strengths, I hope he has invested his salary wisely.
